This temple in the former capital houses one of the country's most impressive reclining Buddha images, an enormous figure some sixty-five metres long sheltered beneath a large metal-roofed pavilion. The serene white face, glass-inlaid eyes and gilded robe draw a steady stream of pilgrims, while the soles of the giant feet are marked with a grid of auspicious symbols representing the qualities of the Buddha. Set on a low hill amid monastic buildings, it offers a striking encounter with devotional art.
