The remains of a Dutch colonial stronghold begun in 1624 in Anping, then the centre of European trade on Taiwan. Built by the Dutch East India Company, it fell in 1662 to Koxinga, the Ming loyalist who ended Dutch rule on the island. Little of the original bastion survives beyond a section of weathered brick rampart bonded with sugar and crushed shell, but a later watchtower and museum interpret the site. It stands as one of the earliest and most significant colonial monuments in Taiwan.
