A Western-style coastal fortress near Anping, built in the 1870s to defend Tainan after a diplomatic crisis exposed the island's weak sea defences. Designed by a French engineer, it introduced European bastion geometry and modern Armstrong guns to Taiwan, ringed by a moat and reached over an arched bridge. The name is inscribed above its brick gateway, once the outer wall of the earlier Fort Zeelandia. Restored replica cannon and the surviving ramparts allow visitors to trace the layout of this pioneering piece of military engineering.
