Taiwan's oldest city and former Dutch and Qing-dynasty capital, Tainan preserves a concentration of 17th- and 18th-century fortifications, temples, and merchant lanes unmatched elsewhere on the island. Chihkan Tower, built on the site of the Dutch Fort Provintia, and Anping Fort, constructed by the Dutch East India Company in 1624, bracket a historic core dense with banyan-shaded temple courtyards and traditional snack vendors.
