A large bell pavilion in the Jongno district of central Seoul housing a bronze bell whose tolling once signaled the opening and closing of the city gates during the Joseon dynasty. The original structure and bell were damaged over the centuries, and the present pavilion was rebuilt in the 1980s. The name Jongno, meaning bell street, derives from this landmark. Each New Year's Eve, dignitaries ring the bell thirty-three times in a broadcast ceremony that draws large crowds to the surrounding intersection.
