This bronze figure of a seated young woman, installed in 2011 opposite the Japanese embassy, commemorates the women subjected to wartime sexual slavery by the Imperial Japanese military. The quiet, resolute figure has become a powerful symbol of the movement seeking acknowledgment and apology for those wrongs. Copies have since appeared around the world, but the Seoul statue remains the original. Its restrained form and the empty chair beside it invite reflection on a painful, unresolved chapter of history.
