Katsuo-ji is a mountain temple in the hills north of Osaka, famous as a place to pray for victory and success, its name punning on the word for winning. The grounds are covered with thousands of small round daruma dolls left by visitors seeking their goals fulfilled, tucked into every crevice, lantern, and ledge across the slopes. Founded over a millennium ago and surrounded by forest, it has halls, a pagoda, and a pond wreathed in mist. In autumn the maples blaze red, drawing photographers to the quiet, elevated setting.
