Osaka Tenmangu is a major shrine dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, the deity of scholarship, standing near the long Tenjinbashisuji shopping street. Founded in the tenth century, it is the focal point of the Tenjin Matsuri, one of Japan's greatest festivals, when portable shrines are paraded and a flotilla of boats moves along the river accompanied by fireworks each July. Outside festival time the tranquil precinct, with its worn stone lanterns and votive plaques, offers a quiet pause amid the busy surrounding district.
