This much-loved bridge carries Nevsky Prospekt across the Fontanka River and is famous for the four bronze sculptural groups at its corners, each depicting a man taming a rearing horse. Created by Pyotr Klodt in the mid-nineteenth century, the Horse Tamers trace a narrative of humans gradually subduing wild nature. The statues were hidden during the wartime siege and later restored, while cast-iron railings decorated with mermaids and seahorses complete the ensemble.
