Known as the Fountain House for its position on the Fontanka embankment, this eighteenth-century palace was home to the aristocratic Sheremetev family for generations. Today it houses a museum of music, displaying a rich collection of historic instruments in restored state rooms. A wing of the complex preserves the memorial apartment of the poet Anna Akhmatova, who lived there for many years, making the site a place of literary pilgrimage set around a quiet yellow-walled courtyard.
