Housed in a purpose-built Neoclassical hall beside the Russian Museum, this institution documents the traditional cultures and daily life of the many peoples of Russia and neighbouring lands. Its galleries display costumes, tools, jewellery, dwellings and ritual objects gathered from across the former empire and Soviet territories. A grand marble memorial hall honouring Emperor Alexander III forms the ceremonial core of this early-twentieth-century foundation.
