Opened in the late 1980s, this Moscow Metro station takes its scientific theme from the chemist Dmitri Mendeleev, with light fittings and metal lattices shaped to suggest molecular and crystalline structures. Cool grey and white marble and abstract geometric chandeliers give it a restrained, modern character compared with the ornate Stalinist stations. Outside the entrance stands a small bronze monument to stray dogs, which has become an affectionate local landmark.
