Operating since the late eighteenth century, these are the oldest and most celebrated public bathhouses in Moscow, occupying a lavishly decorated building near the city centre. The historic men's section features marble halls, carved wood, stained glass and Moorish and Gothic flourishes that make bathing feel like visiting a palace. Generations of writers, artists and merchants have steamed in its wood-fired sauna rooms, and the baths appear in Russian literature and film.
