The Moscow Kremlin is a triangular medieval fortress on the Moskva River whose crenellated red-brick walls enclose five palaces, four cathedrals, and the seat of the Russian government. Red Square, immediately outside the Kremlin's northeastern wall, is framed by the State Historical Museum, GUM arcade, Lenin's Mausoleum, and the nine domes of Saint Basil's Cathedral, a 16th-century structure whose asymmetrical composition and vivid colours make it one of the most recognisable buildings in the world. The square and cathedral are most photographed in the blue hour before sunrise or after snowfall.
