State Museum of Oriental Art

Housed in a Neoclassical mansion on the Boulevard Ring, this Moscow museum is devoted to the arts and material cultures of Asia, the Caucasus and the wider East. Its holdings range from Japanese and Chinese lacquer, porcelain and painting to Central Asian textiles, Persian miniatures and Buddhist sculpture. Founded in the early Soviet period to broaden public understanding of non-European art, it remains one of Russia's most comprehensive collections of the kind, arranged by region for easy comparison.
