One of the original stations of the Moscow Metro, opened in the mid-1930s, Kropotkinskaya is admired as a masterpiece of restrained underground architecture. Its central hall is defined by tapering ten-sided columns clad in grey and rose marble that flare into palm-like uplighters, casting a soft indirect glow. The design was intended to evoke an ancient Egyptian hall and won international awards, showing how light and proportion alone can create a monumental civic space.
