This broad single-span bridge carries traffic across the Moskva River directly beside the Kremlin, offering one of the most photographed views of its walls, towers and cathedral domes. The present steel structure dates from the 1930s, replacing earlier stone crossings on roughly the same site that gave the bridge its name, meaning great stone bridge. At night the illuminated fortress reflected in the water makes the vantage from its pedestrian walkways especially striking.
