This enormous bronze-and-steel monument on an artificial island in the Moskva River depicts Tsar Peter the Great standing on a fantastical sailing ship, marking the tercentenary of the Russian navy he founded. Designed by Zurab Tsereteli and unveiled in the late 1990s, it rises around ninety metres, making it one of the tallest statues in the country. Its scale and style have provoked lasting debate among Muscovites, and it remains an unavoidable feature of the riverside skyline.
