Established as the national military museum, this institution near the Byzantine Museum traces Greek military history from antiquity to the modern era across several floors of thematic galleries. Displays include reconstructed ancient weapons and armour, medieval and Byzantine arms, uniforms, flags and relics from the War of Independence and the two world wars. Outside, a forecourt exhibits aircraft, artillery pieces and other heavy equipment. The concrete modernist building opened in the 1970s.
