Housed in the 19th-century Villa Ilissia near Syntagma, this Athens museum holds one of the world's richest collections of Byzantine and post-Byzantine art. Its galleries trace the transition from antiquity to Christianity through icons, wall-painting fragments, mosaics, liturgical vessels, sculptures and textiles spanning the 3rd to 20th centuries. Exhibits are arranged chronologically across a landscaped courtyard complex, letting visitors follow the visual language of Orthodox worship.
