The grand parliament building of Serbia dominates a square in central Belgrade with its domed silhouette and sculpted entrance. Begun in the early twentieth century and completed decades later after interruptions from war, it blends academic classicism with monumental ornament. A pair of bronze equestrian sculptures depicting men restraining rearing horses flank the main stairs and have become an emblem of the building. As the seat of the national legislature, it remains a focal point for political life and public demonstrations in the capital.
