Overlooking Republic Square, the National Museum of Serbia is the country's oldest and largest museum, founded in the nineteenth century. Its collections span archaeology, medieval art, and a notable holding of European painting, including works by celebrated Impressionists. Among its treasures is the Miroslav Gospel, an illuminated twelfth-century manuscript regarded as a cornerstone of Serbian written heritage. After a long renovation, it reopened with modern displays across a stately early twentieth-century building.
