This squat Romanesque tower guarded the southern gate of medieval Gradec, the fortified upper town of Zagreb, and today anchors one of the city's finest viewpoints. Since the nineteenth century a cannon known as the Grič cannon has fired from the tower every day at noon, a tradition said to help residents synchronise their clocks. Visitors can climb the internal staircase past small gallery spaces to a rooftop terrace overlooking red-tiled roofs and the cathedral spires. The name derives from a bell that once warned of the closing gates.
