The Bánffy Palace on Union Square is the finest Baroque building in Cluj-Napoca, completed in 1785 for a Transylvanian noble family. Its ornate facade carries columns, coats of arms, and mythological statues along the roofline, framing an arched carriage gateway. Today the palace houses the National Museum of Art, whose galleries display Romanian and European painting, sculpture, and decorative arts. An inner courtyard and grand staircase preserve the atmosphere of an aristocratic residence at the centre of the old town.
