St. Michael's Church rises from the central square of Cluj-Napoca as one of the finest Gothic churches in Transylvania, built by the town's citizens between the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. Its tall neo-Gothic tower, added in the nineteenth century, is the highest church tower in Romania. The lofty nave holds carved portals, a Baroque pulpit, and painted vaults, and the church has hosted coronations and princely assemblies. In front of it stands a large equestrian statue of King Matthias Corvinus, born in the city.
