The artificial palm tree standing at Charles de Gaulle Roundabout is one of Warsaw's most recognisable pieces of public art. Installed in 2002 by the artist Joanna Rajkowska, it was inspired by her travels in the Middle East and offers a surreal, incongruous image of a tropical tree amid the grey city traffic. Over time it became a landmark for meetings, protests and seasonal decorations. Set on Jerozolimskie Avenue, whose name recalls a former Jewish settlement, the palm carries layered meanings.
