The Archcathedral Basilica of Poznań, on the island of Ostrów Tumski, is the oldest cathedral in Poland and a cradle of the Polish church, founded in the 10th century. Its Gothic brick body encloses a Golden Chapel added in the 19th century as a mausoleum for the first Polish rulers. Beneath the floor, archaeological displays reveal traces of the earliest pre-Romanesque structures. Rebuilt after severe wartime damage, the cathedral anchors the historic ecclesiastical island that gave rise to the city.
