Slottsskogen is Gothenburg's largest central park, a sprawling expanse of lawns, woods and ponds laid out in the nineteenth century as a public green space. It contains open animal enclosures with Nordic species, a bird pond, playgrounds and observation points, and it hosts festivals and concerts in the warmer months. Paths wind through varied landscapes from formal areas to wilder groves, making it a year-round retreat for residents. Free to enter and easy to reach from the centre, it functions as a shared backyard for much of the city.
