Skansen Kronan is a seventeenth-century hilltop fortress overlooking central Gothenburg, built to defend the young city against attack from the landward side. Its thick stone walls and crown-shaped design gave it a commanding position, though it never saw serious combat. Over the centuries it served variously as a prison and a museum before becoming a protected monument. The climb to its ramparts rewards visitors with sweeping views across the rooftops and harbour, and the surrounding open ground is a popular spot for walking and picnics.
