On the western edge of Graz stands the most impressive Baroque palace in the province, built in the seventeenth century for the powerful Eggenberg family. Its design is a calendar in stone, with four towers for the seasons, twelve gates for the months and three hundred and sixty-five windows for the days of the year. The state rooms on the upper floor are decorated with a great cycle of ceiling paintings, and the surrounding park is roamed by peacocks and deer. The palace is listed together with the old town as a world heritage site.
