The historic centre of Graz, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, represents an exceptionally well-preserved ensemble of Renaissance and early Baroque urban architecture developed under the Habsburgs in the 16th and 17th centuries. The Schlossberg, a wooded rocky hill in the heart of the city, rises 123 metres above the rooftops and is topped by a 16th-century clock tower whose large hand shows the minutes — opposite to most clock conventions. Italian-trained architects were responsible for many of the arcaded courtyards and loggias visible in the inner city.
