The Murinsel is a floating platform set in the river Mur in the centre of Graz, built for the city's year as European Capital of Culture in 2003. Designed by the artist Vito Acconci as a shell of steel mesh and glass, it takes the shape of a half-open seashell and holds a cafe, a small amphitheatre and a children's play area. Two footbridges connect it to either bank, letting people cross the river through the structure. Lit up at night, its shining form has become one of the modern symbols of the city.
