Red-tiled roofs pack the old town of Graz beneath its clock-towered castle hill. Centuries of Habsburg presence and ambitious aristocratic families drew builders from Central Europe and the Mediterranean alike, layering Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque into an unusually complete urban ensemble. UNESCO inscribed the historic centre in 1999 and later added Schloss Eggenberg, the Baroque palace on the city's western edge whose design encodes calendar and cosmic symbolism, to the World Heritage listing.
