This wooded hill rises on the right bank of the Salzach, opposite the fortress that dominates Salzburg's old town. A steep path climbs past a Capuchin friary and the remnants of the old city wall to a summit ringed with viewpoints and quiet forest trails. From its terraces the whole basin of the city spreads out, with the river, the domes and the mountains beyond. The writer Stefan Zweig once lived in a villa on its slopes. Roe deer and chamois are sometimes seen among the trees on the way up.
