Horse Guards is a Palladian building on Whitehall built in the 1750s as the headquarters of the British Army and the ceremonial entrance to the royal parks and palaces. Mounted troopers of the Household Cavalry, in gleaming helmets and breastplates, stand guard at its arch and are among the most photographed sights in London. Behind it lies Horse Guards Parade, a vast gravelled expanse where the annual Trooping the Colour marks the sovereign's official birthday. A museum explains the mounted regiments.
