Rising at the centre of Trafalgar Square, Nelson's Column commemorates Admiral Horatio Nelson, killed at the 1805 Battle of Trafalgar that secured British naval supremacy. Completed in 1843, the granite Corinthian column carries a stone statue of Nelson gazing towards the Admiralty and the sea. Four bronze lions cast partly from captured French cannon guard its base, hugely popular with visitors who climb on them. Bronze panels depict Nelson's great battles, anchoring one of London's most famous spaces.
