Battersea Park was laid out on former marshland beside the Thames and opened in 1858 to provide recreation for a growing south London population. Its varied grounds include a boating lake, subtropical gardens, a children's zoo and sports pitches, along with monumental sculpture. Overlooking the river stands the Peace Pagoda, a gilded Buddhist monument given by a Japanese order in 1985. The park has hosted a festival funfair and the first recorded football match played under Football Association rules.
