Spanning the Thames between Chelsea and Battersea, Albert Bridge is a delicate combination of cable-stayed and suspension design opened in 1873 and named after Prince Albert. Painted in soft pinks, greens and blues and outlined at night by thousands of bulbs, it is among the most decorative of the city's river crossings. A notice at each end still warns troops to break step when marching across, a reminder of fears about resonance. Nicknamed the Trembling Lady, it keeps its fragile Victorian character.
