The mother church of Roman Catholics in England and Wales, Westminster Cathedral rises near Victoria in a striking Neo-Byzantine design of banded red brick and pale stone, completed in 1903. Its tall campanile offers views over the city, reached by lift. Inside, the vast dim nave is progressively clad in coloured marble and glittering mosaics, a scheme deliberately left unfinished so future generations may continue it. Eric Gill's carved Stations of the Cross line the walls.
