Holland Park in west London is a leafy district park built around the ruins of Holland House, a grand Jacobean mansion largely destroyed by wartime bombing. The surviving wing now houses a youth hostel, while the terraces host an open-air opera season each summer. Within the grounds lies the Kyoto Garden, a Japanese garden with a tiered waterfall, koi pond and stone lanterns among maples. Woodland walks, formal flowerbeds, peacocks and an ecology centre make it one of the most varied green spaces in the capital.
