Facing the Royal Albert Hall on the southern edge of Kensington Gardens, the Albert Memorial was commissioned by Queen Victoria to honour her husband Prince Albert, who died in 1861. Designed by George Gilbert Scott in Gothic Revival style, it shelters a gilded seated statue of the prince beneath a towering canopy encrusted with mosaics and sculpture. A marble frieze depicts nearly two hundred artists and thinkers, while corner groups represent the continents. It is a lavish monument to imperial confidence.
