Kensington Gardens adjoins Hyde Park and was once its private western portion, laid out as formal royal gardens around Kensington Palace. It is more ornamental and tranquil than its neighbour, with tree-lined avenues, the Round Pond and the long Italian Gardens water feature at its northern end. The much-loved bronze statue of Peter Pan, erected secretly overnight in 1912, stands beside the Long Water. The Diana Memorial Playground and associations with J. M. Barrie make it rich in childhood imagination.
