St Pancras Old Church, tucked behind the great railway stations, is reputed to stand on one of the oldest sites of Christian worship in England, though the present building is largely a Victorian restoration. Its churchyard holds notable graves, including that of the writer Mary Wollstonecraft, at whose tomb her daughter Mary Shelley is said to have met the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley. When railway works disturbed graves, the young Thomas Hardy arranged displaced headstones around an ash tree, now the Hardy Tree.
