Roman gates, a vast 1st-century amphitheatre and the crenellated bridges of the Scaliger lords layer two thousand years of history along a bend of the Adige. Verona flourished under its medieval ruling family and later within the Venetian Republic, and its exceptional density of monuments spanning antiquity to the Renaissance earned it UNESCO World Heritage status in 2000. Opera in the Arena and Shakespeare's Juliet keep the old city as alive as ever.
