This Roman gate stands astride one of the main streets of Verona, marking the entrance to the city on the road from the west in ancient times. Its white stone facade, pierced by two arched carriage openings and rows of windows above, dates from the first century and once formed part of the walled defences. An inscription and decorative details survive on the front, though the rear of the structure has long since disappeared. Traffic and pedestrians still pass beneath the arches.
