Piazza Bra is the largest square in Verona, a wide space wrapped around the great Roman amphitheatre known as the Arena, which still stages summer opera to thousands of spectators. A curving pavement called the Liston runs along one side, lined with cafés and the neoclassical town hall, while gardens and a fountain fill the centre. The square marks the entrance to the historic core from the old city gates. Its scale and the ancient stone tiers of the Arena give it a grand, theatrical atmosphere.
