No hilltop carries more weight in Western culture than the Acropolis of Athens. After the victory over the Persians, with Pericles directing and the sculptor Pheidias guiding the work, 5th-century BC Athens crowned the rock with the Parthenon, the Erechtheion, the small temple of Athena Nike and the monumental Propylaea — the defining ensemble of the classical spirit. It has stood on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1987.
