Built with funds from Julius Caesar and Augustus, the Roman Agora replaced the older Greek market as the commercial heart of Athens under Roman rule. The rectangular colonnaded courtyard was entered through the Gate of Athena Archegetis, a marble portal still standing at its western end. Nearby rises the octagonal Tower of the Winds, an ancient timepiece combining sundials, a water clock and a weather vane, its frieze carved with personified winds.
