Built around the early 10th century, the Samanid Mausoleum is considered the oldest surviving Islamic monument in Central Asia and a masterpiece of early Islamic architecture. The cubic structure is notable for its single-fired brick construction, in which the same bricks function simultaneously as structural material and as an intricately patterned decorative surface. It stands in a park on the northern edge of Bukhara's historic centre.
