One of the oldest surviving mosques in Central Asia, sunk below the present street level in the heart of old Bukhara. Its carved brick portal dates from the twelfth century and stands on a site associated with pre-Islamic worship, reflecting layers of the city's religious history. Excavations have revealed earlier structures beneath the visible building. Long used as a carpet museum, it illustrates the continuity of sacred space in one of the great Silk Road cities.
